I am thinking...what is the minimum about of sleep that a body can handle before it begins to suffer serious harm. I knew a guy once that swore that he only meditated and napped for like a hour and a half per day Mon-Fri...then slept on the weekend. Don't know if it is true though.
yeah no kidding... my weekdays are when I make up for the weekend
but there is some truth to the meditation lowering how much sleep you need... I know when I meditate I only sleep for 4-6 hours compared to 7.5-8hours at night. I believe it has something to do with brainwaves and how during meditation you put off both Theta and Delta waves in the deeper states, thus replicating the patterns of sleep and actually going a stage or two deeper than what is achieved during sleep. I don't have any of my Israel Regardie literature lying around to quote, but I believe that's correct.
Depends on what kind of mediation you are talking bout really. All mediation does not work on everyone and it actually can create anxiety in some, each one takes many years to truely master. If you are talking by deep muscle relaxation it may or may not work for you. If you r talking bout progressive relaxation again takes many years to master. The actual teachings of zazen and so forth require full devotion to the teachings and practice... it is documented that once you do become a master of these techniques your respiratory decreases, along with heart rate, and a couple of other physiological symptoms to a more sedative like state. So that is where the sleeping less takes place. haha sorry tangent there, really interesting stuff actually if you look into it...
but back to the topic i'm thinking i hope my little brother has a safe flight back today, and i have way too much stuff to do tom. i'm also thinking i might actually try finish up painting!
I'm talking about breath counting... and yeah, it does take quite some time to really see major progress, but you get some of the benefits immediately like calmer nerves, better attitude, and higher tolerance to stress

That's hilarious you use that as an example though, cause doesn't ZaZen teach working towards your goals without worrying about getting to them?
now THAT takes devotion

i have been re-reading the book of zazen, and eventhough i find it extremely hard to be devoted to, the little things i have gotten from my readings have been very helpful.
ur right katie, the little things do help you quickly. lol DBK i guess devotion wasnt the best word to use eh? haha i wasnt taking away from what u said just adding to it, i find the whole world of alternative medicine (CAM) and mediation fascinating and extremely helpful! Allgood!
