Whats in a name
Most American boys are still named after saints, (Michael, Christopher, David) whereas with girls, only one saint's name, Emily, is still popular.
In the past, girls were often named after flowers, plants, jewels and months of the year. Come on, think of all your aunts. How many fit the bill?
A popular direction for girls' names right now is to give them a unisex nameMorgan, Robin, Jordan, or Taylor come to mind.
In some parts of West Africa, people name their children for the day on which they were born.
Hannah was the number one name for girls this year, outranking Emily, which won the top spot last year. They were followed by Sarah, Madison, Brianna, Kaylee, Kaitlyn, Haley, Alexis and Elizabeth.
For the last few years many celebrities have chosen strange names for their children. What about Hud Mellencamp? Rebop Rundgren? Jett Travolta? Paris Michael Katherine Jackson (Michael's daughter)? Selah and Zion, children of Lauryn Hill and Rohan Marley? Sindri, son of Bjork? And True and Sonnet, daughters of actor Forest Whitaker?
Some Inuit Indians give themselves new names as they grow older, in the hopes of regaining the strength of youth.
There was a tremendous rise in the popularity of the previously rare name Shirley in 1934 when Shirley Temple was at the peak of her popularity. The same thing happened with the name Florence in the late 1800s, when Florence Nightingale was the heroine of the day.
Historically it was a common practice to use place names as given names Romeo after Rome, and Florence Nightingale (there she is again!) after Florence, Italy.
In Indonesia, you may change your name after you suffer some illness or misfortune. The new name is supposed to confuse the evil spirits and hide you from the angel of death.
Alternate spellings are a common way of making more familiar names unique. The very popular Emily can be spelled Emalee, Emillie, Emele or any combination thereof.
For 34 of the last 35 years Michael has topped the list of most popular names for baby boys. After him, last year's top boys' names were Jacob, Matthew, Nicholas, Christopher, Joseph, Zachary, Joshua, and Andrew.
The Ladies Home Journal says to watch for the birth of more Harrys (as in Potter), Sabrinas (as in Teenage Witch), and Britnys (as in, you know...)

To every one of the names on that list...eew. People name their kids some weird stuff. Don't they grasp that fact that this new person is now going to have to grow up and be stuck with whatever their hippie/druggie/yuppie/GenX/dumbass parents thought was "cute" at the time?
I don't want my kids coming back to me someday, asking me what the HELL I was thinking!

my family names the firstborn sons based on family names. first name is the name of one of our dead ancestors, middle name is the first name of the father. this sometimes has the first and middle name being the same. that would suck.
everyone else, the parents just pick names they like. they still usually stick to the irish names though, we tend not to americanize.
