Digital Photography Tips
Shooting tips let you point-and-click to better pics.

We all want to take better digital photos. On tonight's "Screen Savers" I'll share a few tricks that'll work for anyone.

General tips

Deal with shutter delay
When you use a basic digital camera, plan for shutter delay, the time between when you press the shutter to the time the camera actually fires. If you're not careful, you'll move the camera while it takes a picture.

Use the screen, not the viewfinder
The viewfinder on basic cameras provides an approximation of what the camera will capture while the screen shows exactly what you'll get. In direct sunlight you'll probably have to use the viewfinder because it'll be difficult to see the screen.

Bring backup
When traveling or leaving home to shoot, don't forget to pack extra batteries and memory.

Outdoor shooting tips

Use the sun or backlight
Shoot with the sun low and at your back. When you shoot into the sun, you'll only get a silhouette. You can also tell your camera when a subject is lit from behind by pressing your camera's backlight button. It will fire a flash to light your subject.

Add something for scale
When you take a landscape photo, add an object for scale. For example, you'll have no idea how big carvings on a temple really are unless you have a person in the scene.

Don't always center your subject
Objects don't always need to stay in the center of your shot. Press the shutter halfway to lock focus and move the camera. By putting the subject off to one side, you get a sense of space you'd otherwise lose.

Scan before shooting
Look at the four corners of your frame before shooting and make sure you have everything you want in the shot. If you're taking a picture of people with a landmark, don't leave out the landmark.

Indoor photography

Use flash when photographing people
Indoor light usually isn't strong enough to properly capture people. Try taking a picture with the flash and without the flash and compare your images on-screen. You'll realize pretty quickly when you want to use a flash. Also remember that flash takes a moment or two to warm up, so don't get your subjects smiling too early.

Experiment
When shooting interiors, your camera will usually tell you it needs flash. Experiment by turning the flash off. Hold the camera steady and snap to see what details and colors suddenly come alive.

Photos in a snap
If you want to command everyone's attention in a group photo, snap your fingers above your head. When everyone looks up, click!
