what is the propose of different time zones within one continent or nation, such as the U.S.?

because if we didn't, the people in california right now, wouldn't have morning daylite until 11:00 am

Thats due to the earth revolving around the sun and the axes of the earth not being straight up and down like "|", but it being slanted like "". If you did not daylight savings time, you would notice a big difference when the sun comes up and when it sets. i got my words messed up, i meant daylight savings time....not times zones.
