Blatant, "this was our back yard" last week photo shot:

Image

That's at Rocky Point - between Pipe and Sunset. Buddies and sister and I got a house there for the week during the pipe contest (although we flew in while the Eddie was going down (missed it) and flew out during the finals (wasn't that big anyway). North shore was a zoo, as to be expected I guess, but it was completely nuts the first couple of days we got there. I'd say Rocky point was breaking better than any other place on the north shore that week.

I had no business surfing that big stuff with 500 other people who were probably all sponsored, but my buddy and I did get a little time in at the break behind Turtle Bay - decent little right hand point break with just a few other friendly people. Had a lot of fun.

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=2 ... 8e4a1276eb Don't have all my pics up, but here are a few. Was planning on saving up to go watch teahupoo next may, but I see they moved it to August for some reason - better window? Oh well, gives me more time to save :)

Sick! I'm jealous. I watched the Eddie and the Pipe online. Friggin awesome week of surf there. The waves sucked for the final but yeah up to then it looked great. I was hoping for a Dane vs Kelly show...

psht... I wish. hehe - I was behind the lens. That pic doesn't really do that place any justice in showing how many people were out. It was absolutely mad - tons of people in the water and tons of photographers on land (and water too). Most of the rippers were groms busting crazy airs (rarely landing them though).

I was actually hoping for an all florida Hobgood vs Slater final. Oh well

I checked out some of those pics on Facebook. Sick! The ever so classic, it's way bigger once you get out there looks in full-effect. I also watched the Eddie at a local surf shop here & caught some of the Pipe highlights. Definitely some of the best waves I've seen for the winter season in a while.

It seems that spring time would be best to hit up the North Shore if you want to surf. All of the CT guys have left & there's still plenty of swell. There's no way I would paddle out at some of those breaks during winter. As you said, mass crowded!

Here's some info for next year's tour which explains the date extension for Tahiti.
Significant changes have been made to the ASP world tour schedule for 2010.

Chopes has been moved three months later in the year, from May to late August, placing it further in the window of Antarctica’s volatile storm season.

After a stellar contest in which several back up venues were used, before a superb final day of action at Supertubes, Peniche, Portugal has been added as a permanent fixture to the ASP calendar. It replaces Mundaka, which was dropped last week due to the fickle nature of the wave and the absence of a worthy back up location. The Portugal contest will be hosted by Rip Curl, meaning they’ve added a contest and Billie’s have dropped one.

we got a ride home and tommy had nowhere to go so he stayed at my house and we drank a little more and i went to bed and tommy drank some more and went down stairs and got to work. in some sort of a blacked out state he proceeded to decorate every surfboard in my house beautifully with a can of black spray paint. numbers; letters; pentograms; skulls; mythical indian symbols; words of wisdom such as: 'no good board' and 'ur mom.'

Nutters!

Good thing that Dane has a raging sense of humor. Plus he'll get a whole new quiver from Al in no time. I wonder what Rob's reaction was to seeing his quad all sprayed up? :?

haha, wow, I hadn't seen this. Tommy's not invited to my house!

Not sure if any of you read or heard, but I think I read that the RC Pro Search is going to be somewhere in the Caribbean this year. Much closer to home ;) (although I'm always down for a far aways trip)

COOLANGATTA, Queensland/Australia (Monday, February 22, 2010) - The Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover, Stop No. 1 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, will commence its waiting period this weekend, ushering in the greatest assemblage of surfing talent in history with 15 ASP World Titles being represented amongst the 48-man draw.

Kelly Slater (USA), 38, former nine-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 6, will return to the singlet this season, challenging for an unprecedented 10th ASP World Title against the worlds best surfers in the worlds best waves. Coming away with an ASP Dream Tour win in Brazil last season, Slater made a mid-year challenge for the crown, yet fell short of the Australian onslaught.

"I never found myself in the right mind frame to deal with the pressure of a tenth title and find the excitement and purpose for what I was doing for more than a few heats last year," Slater said. "Brazil worked out but all the close heats went the other guys way and I just made a lot of mind decisions and not surfing from the gut and real feelings. I am comfortable with 9 (ASP World Titles), but yeah, 10 has a certain allure to it."

Personally I don't care much, but I'm really surprised Land Rover has a sponsorship deal on the tour. I'm shocked Surfrider Foundation and many of the competitors haven't raised more of a stink about it. What's next- Pipeline Masters presented by Hummer or the Billabong Pro presented by Exxon?

Don't like Land Rovers eh?

If it wasn't for sponsors, there would not be a pro tour, period. Now, I would have a problem with Exxon, Citgo, or some other whoring company sponsoring a event. However, I have no dealio with car companies jumping into the game. Sh#t, Freddy P & Benji Weatherley are both sponsored by Bud Light. Occy is sponsored by Corona & Reef Macintosh rides for Audi. These companies have actually helped the tour with increasing prize purses & expanding contests, overall. The crap economy really killed it for a lot of surfer's contracts & the smaller surf companies.

I don't really have anything particiular against Land Rovers or other gas guzzlers. I would have liked to have one on just about any surf trip I made to Central America. I was just surprised that Land Rover and the ASP tour were in bed together- even in this financial crises. I just don't understand why the ASP can't get surfing on a major network and get funding that way. The people who are running the NHL must be the same as the ones running the ASP.

Surfing has never been viable programming, for some reason, for the major networks. They've tried it before (remember Hot Summer Nights with Surfer Magazine TV?). Funding wouldn't come from a network, anyway. It all comes from advertising. Luckily, at least we have Fuel which is running some of the ASP contests in live format this season.
